Individual vs. Group Decision Making

“Are individuals or group better at carrying out an activity?” This is a clear question that is very significant regarding our study in this document. Supposing it was vividly true that those who work in a group do not perform the activity well as individuals. Less motivation would be manifested in people for the urge of forming groups at all. First let us define what it decision making and the decision making means. Decision making involves the mental process of selecting the best or preferred course of action from the available options. On the other hand decision making process refers to the process of setting aims or choices gathering or collecting information and finally assessing the alternative options or occupation. This assignment will involves the types of activities or the tasks that are always been handled by the group or the individuals ( Castellan,2013).  However, in our normal society, people like working as a team in groups. In fact, it have been observed that people do work in groups so often that it might be concluded that groups automatically performs the activities or a given chore than when it is performed by an individual. Such conclusions cannot be made too hurriedly. Actually the main performance of individuals and groups depend on various factors. The factors will be discussed below since each factor will be analyzed if it fits the group performance or the individual.

People do make several decisions which include: medical choices, career decisions, romantic decisions, political decisions and financial decisions. Quite often, the process of making decision is commonly specific to the decision that it’s being made (Castellan,2013).  Decision and choices made are always simple and seem straight forward, while other decision made are hard and require a several step approach to making the decisions. Several significant decisions in undertaken in our society or community are made by groups of individuals such as the governing bodies, business partners, juries, families and teams. The analysis of the case study was done and the following questions were addressed systematically as asked.

Decision statement

Based on the case study analyzed, Mueller is facing a big obstacle as she tries to convince her Father to move the business company of automakers from Michigan to Mississippi. She made this decision individually since the company was running bankrupt. Due to this aspect of bankruptcy; Mueller saw it that it was of great importance for the decision made by herself to be undertaken. On the other hand, her father doesn’t agree on this decision made by her daughter. In return, her father saw it that this problem can only be solved in the way of making decision as a group. He was concerned on the effects caused to the employees when the company moves the company from Michigan to Mississippi. Her father, Brofft saw the decision made by her daughter that it will affect the company that the family had built for long. He was sickened by the hope of laying off the workers who they lived together as a family. In the past, Brofft used to make decisions by consulting the manager of the plant and with his best friend Joe Corney. Mueller was a mover and she made most of decisions while working.

There are several factors that affected the decision making between Mueller and her father. First, past experiences can affect the decision making firmly revealed that when something positive or good result from the decision made, people will be more likely to make decision in the similar way given the situation experienced is similar ( Hwang, & Lin,2012).   Mueller had an experience of over seven years as the chief operation officer at AT $ D.S he had performed several work as being the part of staff  before she often had  to decide or make decisions with other colleagues and while she could perform this the thought that she can perform all the things on her own. This made her feel that every decision made by herself was valid and fruitful. She never considered about the effect caused to the family and the employees when the company get moved to Mississippi.

Mostly, the successful business people make decisions on examinations of choices with no regard of past experiences and not the past sunk results as how Mueller took. Second factor is the belief in individual relevance. Mueller believed that moving the company from Michigan to Mississippi will enable them gained a lot while the Father perceived to cause a great negative impact to the family and the 195 employees that will have to lose the jobs. The father believed in also considering the effects that will be caused by the move ( Hwang, & Lin,2012).  Since he wanted to be the president, he put into considerations the lives of the employees. Thirdly, there existed the cognitive biasness between the father and his daughter over the issue. The cognitive biasness resulted since the two had different ways of thinking which is based on the generalizations of ideas and observations which may end up to judgments which is inaccurate and the faulty logic. The above explained factors affected the decision making process between the daughter and the father.

The pros of individual decision making

First, individuals do not usually escape from responsibilities. They are always accountable for the performances and acts. On the other hand, groups it’s not easy to hold any one person to be accountable for the wrong decision. Secondly, making decision individually saves time, energy and it’s not costly. Thirdly, decisions made by an individual are greatly rational and focused when compared to decision made in a group. Lastly, individuals make prompt the case study Moeller had to make a prompt decision for the company to be moved to Mississippi without consultation.

The cons of the individual decision making

First, a group has a great and wider contribution in that it will enable full collection of information exhaustively unlike the individual decision making. Secondly, a group has the capability of discovering the hidden talent and the core competency o workers or employees of a given organization. Lastly, an individual will not take any consideration on every member’s interest unlike the group which takes into account the interest and the likes of the all member’s

Advantages of group decision making

First, the decision making in group has synergy. This means the idea that the whole is bigger than the accumulation of its portions. Decision made by the group collectively has keener judgements than of any of the members. Through discussions made by the group members, collaboration and questioning, the group members can consider the more robust and complete recommendations and conclusions. Secondly, Group decision making necessitates the sharing of information among the members of the group.

Disadvantages of group decision making

Diffusion of the responsibility

The process making decisions by the group initiates a diffusion of responsibilities that impacts in the inadequate accountability for the results. If everyone in the group becomes responsible in the process of making decision, then there’s no one is. There are high chances of the group members to deny or abscond their duties.


Another disadvantage is the aspect of groupthink. This always affects the effective decision results into dysfunctional decision making outcomes.

Biasness such as the self-interested bias is one of the factors that affect the decision made the team. This kind of bias does happen when there are incentives rewarded to the wrong behavior. A leader of the team might dictate others by making the decision that will favor him/her mostly and not considering the other stakeholders. (Saaty, & Peniwati, 2013).

Though the consequences about the decision making in business are minimal and time consuming, whenever there’s a fallout lots of blame goes to the leader and it result into division of the group members especially whenever everyone has different opinion.

The decision making style used in a group will automatically vary by the kind of situation and the decision that needs to be made. The type of information and its quantity needed for a decision affects the choice of decision making style.

Team consensus methods are one of the best methods that it should be used by the team. When the whole group requires being involved in the process then the leader should explore consensus decision making models. . (Saaty, & Peniwati ,2013). This will make each team member get the chance and opportunity to air or provide opinions and input. Finally, the members will have to discuss the alternatives until the come into agreement of the solution.

Decision made by the authority is routinely, takes minimal time, highly assertive and its commonly used in organizations. Its weakness is that there are no group interactions.


While several decisions we make on day to day life activities are simple, some are not. These decisions may need assimilating a lot of information, exploring many different views, and drawing on many experiences. And the consequence of the wrong or right decision may be profound for the organization and the team. So should leaders of the team be decisive and make their own decision and make firm action? In some cases, no. There is always a limit in which and individual can process. Several decisions require full group participations in order to explore decisions. The problem arises when several people are included in making decision since the approach of decision making style changes. These approaches depend on factors such as the time and resources available, type of decision, the nature of the task and the environment the group wants to create. Therefore, group decision making is the best unlike the individual one. Mueller should have considered the effects of moving the company to Mississippi and take into consideration her father’s views.
